The 3rd ESPEN Experts’ Course was successfully held in Texas, U.S.A.

The third ESPEN Experts’ Course in Tracer Methodology in Metabolism took place in College Station, TX on the 27th and 28th of April at the Hilton Conference Center. The intensive course had 32 attendees from a variety of countries (United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, France and Sweden).

A faculty of five experts in the field of isotopic tracer methodology provided lectures and workshops over the course of two days and a number of attendees showed their own work and took the opportunity to ask the experts for advice. A great and productive weekend was completed with Dr. Dwight Matthew’s world famous lecture on “Lessons Learned: Problems and Pitfalls of Using Tracers”. The intensive course that serves as a basis for young researchers, PhD and MD’s to start and continue with confidence their own studies using isotopic tracers was again a great success.

Congratulations to Dr. Nicolaas Deutz, head of the Center for Translational Research in Aging and Longevity at Texas A&M and leader of this year’s course and the faculty, Dr. Matthews, Dr. Rooyackers, Dr. Boirie and Dr. Miles.

Next years course will be organized in Stockholm, Sweden.

3rd ESSD Congress: Dysphagia diagnosis and treatment, a multidisciplinary challeng (Malmö, September 13th-14th)

The European Society for Swallowing Disorders is a new association of and for health care providers working, doing research and studying in the field of dysphagia and swallowing disorders. Courses for different levels of professional expertise, and provides an international quarterly journal, Dysphagia and a website, with information about the Society, future congresses, calendar of events, references, resources and links.

This year’s congress is the 3rd ESSD Congress and will be held in Malmö, Sweden 13-14 September 2013.

49 LLL Clinical Nutrition Diplomas awarded

On March 23rd – 24th, during the Final Examination that was conducted in Cairo, the impressive number of 49 LLL participants was added to the group of ESPEN Clinical Nutrition Diploma graduates.

Congratulations to the new Diploma holders, as well as to all the members of the LLL-Team, who are so well arranging all the relevant activities.

ESPEN Experts’ Course in “Intestinal Failure” was successfully held in Manchester, UK

The second ESPEN Experts’ Course in Intestinal Failure took place in Manchester (UK) on the 8th and 9th of March. There were nearly 50 applications for the 25 places. In the end a multidisciplinary group of 7 surgeons, 5 other doctors, 8 nurses, 3 dietitians and 2 pharmacists participated from a variety of countries (incl. Poland, Denmark, Finland, the Netherlands, Croatia and the UK). Most of the unsuccessful delegates were either from local colleagues (who could visit easily) or late applications when the course was full. All the speakers were local and the team worked hard to ensure a very productive course. The course was run either on the Intestinal failure ward itself or in a nearby seminar room. It comprised –interactive lectures which were case based, workshops, demonstrations and ward rounds based on the delegates’ professional background.

All the delegates completed a quiz at the end which is linked to the ESPEN LLL programme.

The team from Manchester are themselves so enthusiastic and is already wondering when they will have the opportunity to do it again! Congratulations to the whole department and Dr. Jon Shaffer for the great success!
