Dear ESPEN members and followers,

In 2017, the ESPEN Community reached 3’248 members who belong to 57 National PEN societies but also who joined us as Individual members! A record!

ESPEN in 2017 organized very successful events: the 39th ESPEN Congres in Den Haag,the 5th Workshop on Intestinal Failure in Bologna, the 24th ESPEN Course on Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism in Thessaloniki and several Experts’ courses.Congratulations to all those who were involved in the organization of these events.

The Impact Factor of Clinical Nutrition was still increasing and Clinical Nutrition ESPEN has been accepted on PubMed.

Six new Guidelines were fully published in 2017 and are available (free access) via the ESPEN website.

ESPEN has been welcomed as a new affiliated Society to UEG (United European Gastroenterology).

Nutrition Day took place on the 9thof November 2017 throughout hundreds of units around the World!

In 2018 ESPEN will organize and celebrate the 40thESPEN Congress to be held in Madrid (September, 1-4, 2018 ).Don’t miss this extraordinary event!. The 6th Workshop on Perioperative Nutrition will take place in Nottingham (UK) on October 14-15, 2018.The 25thCourse on Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism will be organized in Zagreb, Croatia (October 5-10, 2018).

The new Edition of the Blue Book will be released in 2018 on the occasion of the Madrid Congress.

The 5th ESPEN Workshop ‘Intestinal Failure in Adults’, held in Bologna, Italy on 15 and 16 October 2017, was attended by 128 delegates from 23 countries. Read all about in this report.

Good news! At the occasion of the 25 th UEG Congress ( Barcelona/13 000 attendees) ESPEN is becoming the 17th scientific society or organisation to be  affiliated with UEG.UEG ( United European Gastroenterology) is a huge organisation playing the role of a platform to join all the societies that are involved in the field of Gastroenterology. ESPGHAN was already an UEG member.
We are convinced that our participation to UEG will contribute to the promotion of the nutrition field in the domain of gastroenterology. The UEG President -Prof Michael Manns- did welcome André Van Gossum, Stephane Schneider and Stephan Bischoff who were representing ESPEN.

was held in Thessaloniki, GREECE between 22-28 October 2017. This course was organised for the first time in Greece by GrESPEN and was under the supervision of Prof. Michael Chourdakis. A record number of 34 countries from 5 continents for the first time were represented this year. All 65 delegetes higlhy appreciated the quality of the presentations throughout the 6 days and additionally had the opportunity to participate at 2 LLL’s.
A big “Thank you” goes to a total of 28 ESPEN and local speakers who took part at the event and enormously helped in achieving this success.
Overall, the atmosphere was excellent and both participants and speakers were satisfied with the positive result.

We are pleased to announce the 2nd edition of the ESPEN’s Expert Course: Good Pharmaceutical Practices for Parenteral Nutrition Compounding.

The course will be held 3rd-4th November 2017 at the Pharmacy Compounding Unit, Stanley Dudrick Hospital, Skawina, Cracow, Poland.

Share of ideas, practical experiences and knowledge between speakers and participants and “hands on” workshops is most important element of ESPEN Experts’ Course: Good Pharmaceutical Practices for Parenteral Nutrition Compounding. This course is tailored for pharmacist especially involved in Parenteral Nutrition Compounding. ESPEN will fund the course, whereas delegates have to fund a travel and accommodation. Participants’ number is limited to 20 delegates and ESPEN members have priority.

On Monday, September 11th a joint session ESPEN-ENHA-MNI will take place during the ESPEN Congress. In this 90 min session very interesting topics will be addresses and the MNI Grant winner for 2017 will be announced. Do not miss it!

The next ESPEN Hands-on Course on “Nutritional screening & assessment” will be held in November (9th-10th, November 2017) in  Hogeschool van Amsterdam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.  Do not miss the opportunity to get all the latest on the field of screening and assessment. The 2017 impact factors have now been released and ESPEN is pleased to report that CN’s impact factor rose  from 4.487 to 4.548.

The journal now ranks 9th out of 81 journals in the Nutrition & Dietetics category (up from 10^th out of 80 journals last year).

Among the other major metrics:

• The immediacy index increased from 0.955 to 1.299, the first time it’s been above 1.
• The journal’s self-citation rate is 5.9% (5.1% when we include only citations that were counted in the impact factor). The rates last year were 5.6% and 5.3%, respectively.
• The journals that cite CN the most are:
  o   CN (5.9% of total citations)
  o   JPEN (2.5%)
  o   Nutrients (2.1%)
  o   PLOS One (2.0%)
  o   Nutrition in Clinical Practice (1.9%)

The 24th ESPEN Course of Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care will be held in Thessaloniki (GREECE) between 22nd-28th October 2017.

The main aim of this course is to provide a more practically oriented knowledge in the field of nutrition and every year the level of courses is becoming more and more advanced. The ESPEN Education and Clinical Practice Committee in close collaboration with GrESPEN have built a solid curriculum to provide participants with practically oriented knowledge in the field of nutrition. In the best ESPEN tradition, it will include comprehensive workshops and lectures by international experts that cover a full span of major nutritional topics.
Over 60 participants (3 from each country) will be accepted.
